Press release, 26 October 2026

JOINT BASE ANACOSTIA-BOLLING – The Defense Intelligence Agency has released a new report assessing the scope and breadth of adversary threats in space.

The 2026 edition of Challenges to Security in Space is the third iteration of DIA’s unclassified intelligence reports on the topic. The updated report details the space defense and military goals, including strategies, plans and intentions, of China, Russia and the emerging space powers of Iran and North Korea. This report is designed to help the public achieve a deeper understanding of key space-related challenges and threats to U.S. national security, as well as the extent to which space is treated internationally as a warfighting domain.

The updated report examines the implications of the expanding inventories of dual-use space capabilities, highlights increased space cooperation among adversaries, and details the threat that adversaries pose to global interests in the domain. Challenges to Security in Space also examines the overall space environment, including space hazards such as debris.

As space capabilities play an ever-increasing role in national security and the global economy, these reports aim to develop a greater understanding of the actors, capabilities and motivations that threaten global use of, access to and safety in space.

Information within the report is current as of July 2026.
