SUMMARY:Scotland Says Keep Space for Peace
DESCRIPTION:Over the past decade\, both the US and UK governments have designated space as a key focus as military operations increasingly rely on space-based assets for command and control\, surveillance\, targeting\, missile warning and secure communications with forces deployed overseas. \nIn 2019 the Ministry of Defence (MoD) declared that space should be seen as “a war fighting domain” and over the past two years we have seen the setting up of UK Space Command\, the publication of a UK Defence Space Strategy outlining how the MoD will “protect the UK’s national interests in space” and the announcement of a portfolio of new military programmes to develop space-based military assets. Incredibly\, both the US and UK are also exploring the use of nuclear propulsion for their space systems. \nThe UK is now in the process of developing a number of UK spaceports – including in Shetland\, the Western Isles and Sutherland – from where we will see both commercial and military space launches. We are entering an era of military space expansion by the UK which will inevitably lead to environmental harm and risk of instability and conflict. \nJoin Scottish CND and Space Watch UK to examine how new Scottish spaceports are at the heart of UK government plans to militarise space and what we can do to challenge it. \nWe will follow up this online event with an in-person protest outside Scottish Parliament on Tuesday 3rd October at Noon. \nSpeakers: \n• Dr Jill Stuart is an academic based at the London School of Economics and Political Science. She is an expert in the politics\, ethics and law of outer space exploration and exploitation. She is a frequent presence in the global media on the issue and regularly gives lectures around the world. \n• Dave Webb is former Chair of CND\, Convenor of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space and co-author of the new report ‘Heavens Above: Examining the UK’s Militarisation of Space. \n• George Gunn grew up in the far north of Scotland and now lives in Thurso. He is a poet and has written over fifty productions for stage and radio and has produced several series for BBC Radio Scotland and Radio 4. He has a regular column ‘From the Province of the Cat’ in Bella Caledonia. \n• Timothy Parker a recent graduate of the University of Reading\, researched the development of UK spaceports and the implications of AI for the UK’s nuclear weapons programme as part of an internship for Drone Wars UK. \n• Tor Justad is Chair of Highlands Against Nuclear Transport (HANT). He believes in the words of Margaret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful\, committed citizens can change the world; indeed\, it’s the only thing that ever has.”\nChair: \n• Lynn Jamieson is an academic and Chair of Scottish CND. \nMore details and registration

SUMMARY:Keep Space for Peace Week - The Dangers of Crowded Orbits
DESCRIPTION:Lower Earth orbit (LEO) is becoming dangerously crowded and NASA scientists fear growing space debris and likely cascading collisions in orbit. This\, called the Kessler Syndrome\, would endanger space activities and the use of satellites which so much technology relies on to function.\nThe Global Network is involved in a legal action to pressure the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to follow the law and conduct environmental impact studies before approving the launching of satellites into space. In 1985-88 there were about 5000-6000 objects in orbit. Currently there are roughly 27\,000 human-made objects in space\nElon Musk’s Space X has launched 12\,000 satellites and various companies are now planning some 71\,000 more. The US is moving quickly to grab as many remaining LEO parking spaces as possible\, thereby preventing other nations from deploying satellites.\nCould the FCC be ignoring the law for monitoring environmental impacts because Congress and the Pentagon want to remove all impediments to US military domination of LEO?\nThe emblem of the Space Force\, Semper Supra\, Latin for always above\, shows

SUMMARY:Crowded space: why the increasing militarisation of space could risk nuclear war
DESCRIPTION:The increasing militarisation of space is contributing to a wider problem: it’s becoming dangerously crowded. Currently there are 27\,000 human-made objects floating in space\, and there are plans for this number to increase sharply. Billions of pounds are being spent by multiple countries – including the UK – on militarising space. This includes satellites\, ground-based stations and new technologies such as armed drones\, controlled through satellites. Not surprisingly\, a crowded space has major implications for security\, including increasing the risk of nuclear war. Find out more in this webinar. \nChaired by Kate Hudson (General Secretary\, CND) with speakers: Mélusine Lebert\, Dave Webb and Bruce Gagnon + Q&A \nMore details: here

SUMMARY:Protest the Militarization of Space
DESCRIPTION:Concerned citizens to protest militarizing space at Maine Space Conference October 24 \nMainers concerned about the environmental and security risks of building rocket launch sites on the Maine coast will be in Portland on Thursday\, October 24 outside the Maine Space Conference from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Picketing outside the Holiday Inn by the Bay for the second consecutive year will bring attention to the risks and environmental harm of building rocket launch sites and other facilities for use by the U.S. Space Force\, a branch of the Pentagon. \nBruce Gagnon coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space\, explained why members of his organization will picket the conference: \n“The Maine Space Conference is promoting the militarization of space. Efforts are being made to test hypersonic missiles at the former Loring Air Force Base. bluShit Aerospace is receiving funding from the U.S. Air Force and Space Force to launch ‘dual use’ (military/civilian) mini-satellites into dangerously congested Lower Earth Orbit. \nPromises of lots of jobs\, little to no environmental impacts\, and peaceful exploration of space are the standard claims made at a myriad of potential sites the U.S. military is exploring around the world. \nThe U.S. and Israel have been blocking a space weapons ban treaty (PAROS) at the United Nations for more than 25 years. \nOur nation cannot afford to pay for a new expensive arms race in outer space.” \nLisa Savage of Solon\, founding member of the Maine Natural Guard and Green independent candidate for U.S. Senate in 2020 said\, “The fact that a rocket launch site could be an attractive target for military strikes concerns me. Also\, some of the corporations involved in the conference this year – for example\, Teledyne – directly profit from the U.S.-Israel genocide in Gaza.” \nEnvironmental leader Hillary Lister of Augusta opposes rocket launches in Maine due to pollution concerns: “Rocket launches put wildlife\, fisheries\, and waters at risk no matter what type of fuel is used. Risk of fire is always present and the standard solution is PFAS foam. Also\, waste and debris from rocket launches and satellites contribute to already serious plastic pollution on our land and in our oceans.” \nMore information on existing rocket launch sites may be found at the website No Toxic Rockets for ME

SUMMARY:Keep Space For Peace Week
DESCRIPTION:This Year we are Highlighting Opposition to the “Golden Dome” \nThe US military preparations for global war continue – on land\, at sea\, in the air and in space. Wars cannot be fought these days without support from space systems\, and the aimof the U.S. Space Force is to ensure that it controls outer space and the Earth below. \nTrump’s provocative plan to build a ‘Golden Dome’ unmbrella over North Amrica would cost several trillion dollars and require even more cuts in social spending. If the system ever worked (which is unlikely) it would be a key component of Pentagon nuclear first strike planning. To create an impenetrable Dome is to dream the impossible dream. The US is cutting space observation projecys vital for understanding and mitigating the many and varies causes of environmental degradation. \nIs space as a war-fighting domain the reality we want to build out future on? Instead of weapons in space for a Golden Dome we should be leading the effort to ban weapons and warfare in space. \nMore information here
