SUMMARY:Protest the Cornwall space launch
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 29th October\, Noon – 2pm: Protest outside Newquay Airport\nSt Mawgan\, Newquay TR8 4RQ\nMeet at West Car Park entrance. Public transport details here.  Car parking costs £5 for 2 hours. \nThe first space launch from UK soil will take place sometime during the first two week of  November with a ‘launch window’\, granted by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) opening on  October 29. \nWhile the launch is being presented as a step forward for the civil space industry – with Virgin’s commercial space ambitions being heavily promoted – the rocket will launch two military satellites (that we know about) alongside commercial ones: Prometheus-2 and Coordinated Ionospheric Reconstruction CubeSat Experiment (CIRCE). \nPrometheus-2 is a CubeSat intended as a test platform for monitoring radio signals including Global Positioning System (GPS)\, conducting sophisticated imaging\, and paving the way for a more connected space-based communication system. It was built in collaboration with Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL)\, In-Space Missions\, and Airbus Defence and Space\, with DSTL owning the satellite. \nCIRCE is a joint mission between DSTL and the US Naval Research Laboratory. This satellite\, we are told\, “seeks to advance space weather measurement and modelling capabilities. It comprises two CubeSats that will orbit in near-polar low-Earth orbit.”

Some of the issues we are now facing touch nearly every one of us profoundly and very personally: 5G\, climate change\, war\, covid\, vaccines\, satellites\, physical and mental health epidemics\, political polarization\, racism\, nuclear weapons\, globalization etc. But there is a silver lining. The crises are so impactful they seem to be fast tracking us toward a much-needed global awakening\, reckoning\, and rethinking of where we’re headed. \nAs people who care deeply about the state of the world\, we advocates/campaigners spend much of our time opposing what is wrong. Ukraine increased deployment of military troops to the eastern provinces on the border of Donbass. Russia predictably responded by mobilizing a large part of its military to meet the Ukraine threat. In another incident\, the US publicized two U.S. warships heading into the Black Sea; Russia warned US/NATO not to send warships and the US finally u-turned them in the Dardanelles passage\, the entryway from the Mediterranean into the Black Sea in response to this warning. \nUS/NATO gave “unwavering” support to the Ukrainian government but the Ukrainian president backpedaled on his threat to go to war to regain Crimea. DESCRIPTION:Bruce Gagnon has been to Russia and Ukraine several times in the last couple of years including leading a delegation of 25 on a study tour of Russia in 2019. The purpose of the tour was to listen\, learn\, and stand against the constant demonization of Russia by the media across the west. The idea was to build people-to-people bridges between our nations rather than an escalating arms race which could bring us WW III. During the WW II Nazi invasion of the former Soviet Union 27 million citizens lost their lives from the fascist attacks and occupation. The memory of that war is deep in the consciousness of the Russian people to this day. \nBruce is the Coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space which he co-founded in 1992. A few of his many projects and honors: State Coordinator of the Florida Coalition for Peace & Justice\, writer featured by Project Censored twice\, 2006 recipient of the Dr. Benjamin Spock Peacemaker Award\, current host of a public access TV show called This Issue running in 17 Maine communities and is featured by artist Robert Shetterly in his collection of portraits and quotes entitled Americans Who Tell the Truth. We will be in the lounge. \nThere will be three speakers. \nAt 1 p.m. freelance investigative journalist Ollie Neas will speak about Rocket Lab\, the American company which operates an NZ launch pad for US military and spy agency satellites. It is\, effectively\, a US base on NZ soil. Ollie has written extensively about Rocket Lab\, on investigative NZ sites like The Spinoff. \nAt 2 p.m. world renowned investigative journalist and writer Nicky Hager will speak about: “What Is Five Eyes Today?
