DESCRIPTION:Concerned citizens to protest militarizing space at Maine Space Conference October 24 \nMainers concerned about the environmental and security risks of building rocket launch sites on the Maine coast will be in Portland on Thursday\, October 24 outside the Maine Space Conference from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Picketing outside the Holiday Inn by the Bay for the second consecutive year will bring attention to the risks and environmental harm of building rocket launch sites and other facilities for use by the U.S. Space Force\, a branch of the Pentagon. \nBruce Gagnon coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space\, explained why members of his organization will picket the conference: \n“The Maine Space Conference is promoting the militarization of space. Efforts are being made to test hypersonic missiles at the former Loring Air Force Base. bluShit Aerospace is receiving funding from the U.S. Air Force and Space Force to launch ‘dual use’ (military/civilian) mini-satellites into dangerously congested Lower Earth Orbit. \nPromises of lots of jobs\, little to no environmental impacts\, and peaceful exploration of space are the standard claims made at a myriad of potential sites the U.S. military is exploring around the world. \nThe U.S. and Israel have been blocking a space weapons ban treaty (PAROS) at the United Nations for more than 25 years. \nOur nation cannot afford to pay for a new expensive arms race in outer space.” \nLisa Savage of Solon\, founding member of the Maine Natural Guard and Green independent candidate for U.S. Senate in 2020 said\, “The fact that a rocket launch site could be an attractive target for military strikes concerns me. Also\, some of the corporations involved in the conference this year – for example\, Teledyne – directly profit from the U.S.-Israel genocide in Gaza.” \nEnvironmental leader Hillary Lister of Augusta opposes rocket launches in Maine due to pollution concerns: “Rocket launches put wildlife\, fisheries\, and waters at risk no matter what type of fuel is used. DESCRIPTION:Lower Earth orbit (LEO) is becoming dangerously crowded and NASA scientists fear growing space debris and likely cascading collisions in orbit. This\, called the Kessler Syndrome\, would endanger space activities and the use of satellites which so much technology relies on to function.\nThe Global Network is involved in a legal action to pressure the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to follow the law and conduct environmental impact studies before approving the launching of satellites into space. In 1985-88 there were about 5000-6000 objects in orbit. Currently there are roughly 27\,000 human-made objects in space\nElon Musk’s Space X has launched 12\,000 satellites and various companies are now planning some 71\,000 more. The protest time will be settled at the Blenheim meeting.\n \n\nIf you want to go to just the protest but not the meeting\, text Anti-Bases Campaign’s Lynda Boyd 0274 797789 on the day and she will supply the details.\n \n\nSince our last protest (2021) the look of the spy base has drastically changed\, with the 2022 removal of the two giant domes and the satellite dishes they concealed.\nThey were officially deemed obsolete.\n \n\nBut although the domes have gone\, Waihopai is still a spy base\, albeit a less conspicuous one\, and the spying by the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) goes on\n \n\nOur campaign has always been to call for the closure of the base.\n \n\nWe started the campaign in 1988\, when Waihopai was an empty paddock yet to be built on.\n \n\nThe spying goes on\, so ABC’s campaign goes on.

Public transport details here.  Car parking costs £5 for 2 hours. \nThe first space launch from UK soil will take place sometime during the first two week of  November with a ‘launch window’\, granted by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) opening on  October 29. \nWhile the launch is being presented as a step forward for the civil space industry – with Virgin’s commercial space ambitions being heavily promoted – the rocket will launch two military satellites (that we know about) alongside commercial ones: Prometheus-2 and Coordinated Ionospheric Reconstruction CubeSat Experiment (CIRCE). \nPrometheus-2 is a CubeSat intended as a test platform for monitoring radio signals including Global Positioning System (GPS)\, conducting sophisticated imaging\, and paving the way for a more connected space-based communication system. It was built in collaboration with Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL)\, In-Space Missions\, and Airbus Defence and Space\, with DSTL owning the satellite. \nCIRCE is a joint mission between DSTL and the US Naval Research Laboratory. This satellite\, we are told\, “seeks to advance space weather measurement and modelling capabilities. It comprises two CubeSats that will orbit in near-polar low-Earth orbit.”

SUMMARY:Waihopi Spy Base Protest
DESCRIPTION:Here is Anti-Bases Campaign’s programme for Saturday January 30th. \n  \nThe protest will start at 10.30 a.m. at the spy base outer gate\, Waihopai Valley Road. There will be speakers\, including new Green MP Teanau Tuiono \n  \nAfter that\, we’re going to the Nativity Church\, 76 Alfred Street\, in central Blenheim. We will be in the lounge. \nThere will be three speakers. \nAt 1 p.m. freelance investigative journalist Ollie Neas will speak about Rocket Lab\, the American company which operates an NZ launch pad for US military and spy agency satellites. It is\, effectively\, a US base on NZ soil. Ollie has written extensively about Rocket Lab\, on investigative NZ sites like The Spinoff. \nAt 2 p.m. world renowned investigative journalist and writer Nicky Hager will speak about: “What Is Five Eyes Today? An Update”. \nAt 3 p.m new Green MP Teanau Tuiono will speak on how to get Waihopai/Five Eyes/defence & foreign policy back onto the political agenda \nWe also plan to screen some extracts from the recently updated documentary “Islands Of The Empire”\, the definitive study of the NZ/US military and inteliigence relationship. \nPlease join us at Waihopai and/or in Blenheim on January 30th. You are welcome to join us for lunch at the Nativity Church (from 12-12.30) but please e-mail us at abc@chch.planet.org.nz in advance\, so that we know numbers for catering. \nFurther details are below\, including our bank account.
